4 Petauke escapees recaptured
Four out of nine suspects who escaped from police custody in Petauke last Tuesday have been captured.
The suspects, who are facing charges ranging from defilement to theft, escaped from Petauke Police Station after tampering with the locking system.
Eastern Province police commanding officer Limpo Liywalii said the rearrested suspects have been slapped with an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody.
And plain-clothes police officers in Chipata on Saturday disrupted a media briefing by Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) president Kasonde Mwenda. Mr Mwenda, who initially wanted to host his meeting at a lodge, claims he was denied permission after the guest house owner received instructions from police.
Speaking to journalists after being questioned by police, Mr Mwenda regretted disruption of his gathering despite notifying police. But Mr Liywalii told Breeze FM that Mr Mwenda was interviewed by police and advised against disregarding the Public Order Act.
He said Mr Mwenda’s notice to hold a meeting was not responded to by police.
Mr Liywalii said Mr Mwenda’s programme was disrupted because he breached the law as he conducted himself in a manner likely to cause breach of peace.
