3200 HOUSEHOLDS BENEFFIT FROM EMERGENCY WETLANDS FARMING INPUTS IN CHOMA

Today, the Minister of Information and Media and Chief Government Spokesperson Hon. Cornelius Mweetwa checked on the distribution of farming inputs under the programme ‘Emergency Foodpack wetland’ in Choma District Southern Province

Below are the highlights:

✅ The Minister expressed delight that Government through the Ministry of Agriculture has been providing farmers with orientations in order to ensure that the seed and fertilizers they receive  is not wasted.

✅ Mr. Mweetwa stated that through agricultural loans, Government hopes to help everyone, even those in formal employment and the public sector, to enable them venture into agriculture.

✅ The Chief Government Spokesperson thanked President Hakainde Hichilema that his government’s interventional measures on the ground are beginning to bear relief amidst the drought which has affected households both in rural and peri-urban areas.

✅The Minister stated that one of the many things President Hakainde Hichilema has done is to encourage a shift in perspective, making people realize that agriculture is both a business and a way of life.

✅ He added that the programme is meant to benefit all Zambians regardless of their political affiliations.

✅ Mr. Mweetwa has urged professionals in the public sector, such as teachers, nurses, and government workers, to also pursue agriculture, noting that in the past, the majority of individuals living in cities believed that agriculture was solely practiced by those living in rural sections of the nation, unaware of the advantages of this practice.

✅He stressed that Government has provided farming inputs not for resale, but they should be used for growing that which will increase household food security in Choma.

✅ Government will continue to implemented measures to ease the burden and pressure on citizens brought about by the drought.

✅ The project is targeted at households living in wetlands, or have water in wells or are leaving near streams that can support agriculture.

✅ The Chief Government Spokesperson has since appealed to those responsible for registering beneficiaries to ensure that only those who qualify and are in need of support must be registered.
