TWO DAYS in prison; 363 more for National Democratic Congress President Chishimba Kambwili as he is rushed to UTH by prison officials after he lost consciousness, officials suspect suicide.
Although Zambia offers bail to a convict wishing to appeal and challenge a custodial sentence, it is not automatic that it can be granted. Therefore at the moment, National Democratic Congress leader Dr Chishimba Kambwili has served two days in prison and he remains with 363.
Lusaka Magistrate David Simusamba sentenced Kambwili to jail for two years on Wednesday, October 14, 2020, after he found him guilty on a charge of forgery and another of uttering a false document. The two sentences will run concurrently which means he will only serve 12 months.
Mt Simusamba is expected to hear the bail application next week Tuesday, 20th October, 2020. But assuming Magistrate Simusamba adjourns or refuses to grand the bail application pending appeal, it means more nights in prison for Dr Kambwili.
Bail is dependent on meeting certain conditions which Batoka Bulls will delve into as the story of Dr Kambwili unfolds. In this matter, Dr. Kambwili was dragged to court by Economic and Equity Party president Chilufya Tayali for forgery, allegedly uttering of false document and giving false information to a public officer.
He was acquitted on the third allegation of giving false information to a public officer. The case is related to the registration of Mwamona Engineering Company.
